Description

Shiitake is the most consumed edible mushroom together with Champignon and, in addition to the culinary aspect, it is also extremely useful in the world of natural medicine. In the East (Japan, China, Korea) its use dates back thousands of years ago, so much so that in China it was used before the cultivation of rice. In the ancient Japanese royal court it was also used as an aphrodisiac food and was considered an elixir of life.

Shiitake is still used to treat viral diseases such as herpes, flu, measles and bronchitis, as well as to treat liver disorders.

In the East (particularly in Japan), Shiitake extract (LEM) is also used as a supplementary aid for some types of cancer due to its remarkable immunostimulating and antitumor action.

Shiitake, from the Japanese “Shii” which means oak and from “Take”, which means mushroom, indicating that it is a type of mushroom that grows on the trunks of these trees, even on dead or dying chestnut, beech and alders, in shady areas, such as woods, or forests and close to rivers, streams, or other sources of fresh water.

Scientific name is Lentinus edodes which means lithe and edible.
